Pavement

leaves1

I’ve been questioned by a few people over the years about how I justify my thinking on certain issues like the paving of natural landscapes.  On one hand, I was raised to appreciate the natural world.  Camping for weeks on end with no human contact wasn’t unheard of in my family and, these days, I find myself appreciating natural landscape more and more.

On the other, I committed ten years of my life to “stunt” rollerblading; an activity that is contingent upon areas being paved.  On top of this, I’ve found I enjoy residing in large cities (I live in Brooklyn) much more than in the middle of corn fields (spent four years at the University of Illinois).

While I still can’t justify this dichotomy in my mind, I stumbled on this picture which, if we could pave all roads in this way, would make me truly, genuinely happy.  The photographer notes that this effect was achieved on accident, but I’d be happier than a flaneur in New York if we could start this technique up all over the place.
